Disney is in serious discussions to revive one of the most popular comedy franchises in cinematic history with a new Home Alone film project that could see the long-awaited return of original star Macaulay Culkin, some 34 years after the original film’s debut.
Journalist Matthew Belloni, on his podcast “The Town,” reported that Culkin paid an official visit to Disney Studios to discuss the possibility of developing a new installment with an unconventional plot.
The proposed adaptation revolves around a dramatic and comedic shift in relationships. Culkin would play a father (widower or separated) struggling to connect with his young son. The situation takes a dramatic turn when the child locks his father out of the house and sets traps to prevent him from entering, offering a modern take on the spirit that made the first film a success.
Culkin had previously hinted at this vision during his “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” tour in 2025, emphasizing that bringing back the character of Kevin McCallister hinges on a strong script and a compelling story.
The franchise’s launch and the resounding success of its first two installments in 1990 and 1992 were closely tied to Culkin’s presence. Subsequent releases without him suffered from low critical and audience reception, the most recent being “Home Sweet Home Alone” in 2021, which faced widespread criticism.
While Disney has yet to issue an official statement, speculation is mounting, fueled by Culkin’s recent flurry of activity and his return to the character with a brief appearance in a 2025 commercial. This strengthens the likelihood that the project will soon see the light of day.
