Celebrating 30 Years of Filmart: A Catalyst for Global Entertainment

Hong Kong’s Filmart, the premier industry platform for film and entertainment, is set to celebrate its 30th edition from March 17-20, 2026. As it embarks on this milestone, it’s crucial to reflect on its origins and the tremendous evolution it has undergone since its debut in June 1997, just before Hong Kong’s return to Chinese sovereignty.

The Origins: Uncertainty and Opportunity

Filmart was introduced during a time of uncertainty. The late 1990s saw the once-flourishing Hong Kong film industry facing challenges as local box office revenues and production numbers began to decline. The city, often dubbed the “Hollywood of the East,” was questioning its position on the global stage. However, the organizers at the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) recognized a unique opportunity: to transform Hong Kong into a vital link between Chinese-language cinema and the rest of the world.

The Resurgence of Chinese Cinema

This strategic move proved timely. In the following years, Mainland China’s cinema experienced explosive growth, eventually positioning itself as the world’s second-largest film market. Filmart adapted quickly, embracing various trends, including pan-Asian co-productions and the emergence of streaming platforms.

Filmart Today: More Than Just Content

As the entertainment landscape continues to evolve, Filmart has expanded its offerings beyond merely being a content marketplace. Candas Yeung, the associate director of the service promotion department at HKTDC, states that this year’s Filmart will focus on fostering a comprehensive entertainment ecosystem.

Adopting Technology: The Future is Now

A notable aspect of Filmart 2026 is its increased emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging trends. According to PwC, AI is expected to add $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, making it essential for industries, particularly media and entertainment. Yeung emphasizes that Filmart is committed to staying at the forefront of this technological shift, inviting exhibitors and programming that align with the latest innovations in AI.

Filmart 2026 will showcase key players like KlingAI, Minimax, Xuanjia Technology, and Daogu Culture, all of which are making strides in the integration of AI within content production.

Enhancements in IP Catalogues

Furthermore, Filmart has made substantial improvements to its IP Catalogue section, evolving it from a static showcase into a dynamic marketplace. With over 1,600 intellectual properties uploaded, the platform now allows users to filter projects based on production stages and explore opportunities for buyers, investors, and distributors.

A Growing Focus on Animation

One of the key trends in the Chinese-language cinema sector is the explosive growth of animation, largely driven by the success of films like Ne Zha 2, which shattered box office records as the highest-grossing animated film of all time. Filmart will host a panel titled The Power of IP in Animation, gathering experts from top companies like Warner Bros Discovery and Fantawild Animation to discuss global trends and growth opportunities.

Youth Engagement: A New Frontier

Another discussion point will be the Harnessing Youth Engagement panel, exploring the impact of pop culture phenomena on consumer behavior. Yeung highlights that understanding this evolving landscape offers brands unique opportunities to forge deeper connections with younger audiences through collaborative storytelling and immersive experiences.

Conclusion: Bridging Cultures and Opportunities

Filmart remains committed to its foundational mission of serving as a bridge between markets, connecting talent and ideas across borders. “Attendees are encouraged to engage with these trends,” says Yeung, “to leverage Hong Kong’s unique positioning in the entertainment industry.”

As the event prepares to celebrate its three-decade legacy, it invites industry professionals to explore new avenues for growth and international collaboration. Filmart continues to be the nexus of creativity, innovation, and opportunity in the entertainment sphere.
