In a move described as a “soft coup” in the AI market, Google announced on Thursday the launch of a new set of tools called “Switching Tools,” designed to make it easier for users to migrate from competing chatbots like ChatGPT and Cloud to its Gemini smart assistant without having to start from scratch.
Transferring “Digital Memory”: No Need to Reintroduce Yourself
The core idea revolves around breaking down the “habit” barrier; many users are hesitant to leave their current platforms because of the time spent training the chatbot to their personal preferences.
The new “Memory” feature works in a clever way: Gemini suggests a prompt to the user to enter into their existing chatbot. The old bot then generates a comprehensive summary of the user’s data, which can be copied and pasted back into Gemini. In this way, Gemini instantly recognizes your interests, the names of your family members, or even your educational background, just as other platforms did.
Resuming Old Conversations with Zip Files
Google didn’t stop at simply transferring personal data; it also allowed users to upload their entire chat history as compressed (Zip) files. Since most competing platforms already allow data export in this format, users will be able to:
Resume Conversations: Continue the conversation with Gemini from where it left off in the other application.
Smart Search: Search within the archive of old chats imported from competing platforms.
The Numbers Game: Can Google Catch Up with OpenAI?
This move comes at a time when ChatGPT dominates the global market; OpenAI announced last month that it had reached 900 million weekly active users.
Despite Google’s significant distribution advantages (Gemini is integrated by default into Android phones and the Chrome browser), it is still trying to close the gap. According to Alphabet’s latest quarterly earnings results, Gemini has achieved 750 million monthly active users, a huge number that puts Google in the position of “chaser” for first place, making new migration tools a strategic weapon in this battle.
