New restrictions from Sony confuse PlayStation players

A new report reveals Sony’s plans to impose a mandatory age verification system on PlayStation users worldwide, a move aimed at enhancing security but which also raises serious privacy concerns.

The report, published by Insider Gaming, states that Sony has begun sending emails to users with the subject line: “Verify your age to continue using communication features.” Under this policy, players who wish to use voice chat or text messaging will have to officially verify their age later this year.

Sony explained in its email: “As part of our commitment to global regulations, you will need to verify your age to continue using communication features, but you will still be able to access other services such as games, trophies, and the store without needing to do this.”

Sony is expected to partner with Yoti, an identity verification company that allows users to verify their age either through facial recognition or by uploading a copy of their official ID.
