At the Game Developers Conference (GDC 2026) on Wednesday, Google announced a major update package for the Google Play Store aimed at the gaming community. These steps reveal the company’s strategy to transform the store into a comprehensive gaming platform that integrates mobile and PC gaming, while also enhancing the role of artificial intelligence and community engagement.
Expanding the Game Library and Performance Testing Before Purchase: Google revealed an expanded library of paid games and highly anticipated PC indie titles, such as Moonlight Peaks and Potion Craft. To facilitate the purchase decision, the company launched Game Trials, a feature that allows players to try a game for a limited time before committing to a purchase, with the ability to resume their progress from where they left off upon completion.

Buy once, play anywhere
In a move to enhance user flexibility, Google introduced a new pricing system under the slogan “Buy once, play anywhere.” A single purchase grants users access to both the mobile and PC versions of select games. A dedicated PC section has also been added to the Games tab, along with a “Wishlist” system that sends alerts when discounts are available.
An interactive community and a smart assistant from “Gemini”
In an effort to compete with platforms like Reddit, Google added a “Community Posts” feature, allowing players to ask questions and discuss games directly within the store.

On the AI front, the company announced the arrival of the “Play Games Sidekick” feature for select games; an API powered by Gemini Live that provides real-time assistance to players during gameplay.
User Interface and Targeted Search Improvements
This announcement comes six months after the redesign of the “Play Games” experience and the launch of the “Leagues” system for friendly competition. Google also enhanced the Play Store with a Gemini-powered “Targeted Search” feature, which allows users to find apps by typing an idea or goal instead of the app’s specific name.
Launch Plan
Game Experiences: Coming soon to mobile devices, and later to PCs.
Community Posts: Currently available in English for select games, with support for additional languages coming soon.
Search and Sidekick Updates: Will be rolled out gradually to subscribers and users over the coming months.
