he Alexandria Public Prosecution has launched a comprehensive investigation into the death of blogger Basant Suleiman, who took her own life by jumping from the 13th floor of a building in the Smouha district early Sunday morning during a live broadcast on social media.
The Public Prosecution ordered several measures, including the seizure of her mobile phone for examination of its data and conversations, and the questioning of her family and several witnesses. Her ex-husband was also summoned for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Public Prosecution also tasked security services with conducting a swift investigation to uncover all the details related to the incident.
In the same context, lawyer Hussein Mansour explained that marital disputes do not in themselves constitute criminal liability, noting that the deceased’s ex-husband would only be held accountable if there is evidence of explicit incitement, threats, or blackmail that may have driven her to suicide.
For its part, the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood highlighted the plight of the two young daughters left behind by the deceased, who are now facing difficult humanitarian circumstances. Dr. Sahar Al-Sunbati, the head of the council, stressed in an official statement the need to provide the necessary support and care for the two girls, including psychological and social support and monitoring their condition with their maternal grandmother.
