Apple is racing against time to overcome what have been described as “bigger-than-expected” technical hurdles in its foldable phone project, amid conflicting media reports about its official market launch date in 2026.
Nikkei: Timeline at Risk
The Nikkei newspaper reported that Apple encountered engineering problems during the “engineering verification testing” phase, a critical stage preceding mass production. The report indicated that the period from now until early May will be “extremely critical,” as component suppliers have been notified of potential production delays of several months due to the complexities of the screen and hinge.
Bloomberg: Mark Gurman Reassures Markets
In contrast, reliable journalist Mark Gurman of Bloomberg refuted these claims, asserting that the device remains on track for its September 2026 launch. Gurman stated that Apple plans to release the foldable model alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max series. While acknowledging that the complexity of the components could limit initial supply by several weeks, he emphasized that the current plan is to release it as scheduled.
Design Challenges and Market Dominance
The foldable iPhone has been a long-awaited project since 2017, aiming to compete with Samsung, which has dominated this sector since 2019. Apple is under pressure to ensure the device’s “durability,” especially since any flaw in the screen or hinge could force the company to postpone the project until 2027, something it is trying to avoid.
