Apple sets maximum battery cycle limit for the new MacBook Neo

Apple has updated its support documentation to confirm the maximum number of battery cycles for the new MacBook Neo.

What does a battery cycle mean?

A battery cycle is the number of times your Mac uses 100% of its battery capacity, whether through a single charge or multiple charges.

Or, as Apple explains:

For example, you could use half the battery on your laptop in one day and then fully recharge it. If you do the same thing the next day, it counts as one charge cycle, not two. In this example, it might take several days to complete one cycle.

What about the MacBook Neo?

According to Apple, the new MacBook Neo has a 36.5-watt-hour lithium-ion battery, which Apple says is sufficient for up to 16 hours of video streaming and up to 11 hours of wireless web browsing.

Apple has updated its support page on “Determining Battery Cycles for Laptop Macs” to include the maximum number of charge cycles for the MacBook Neo.

Based on the document, the MacBook Neo has a maximum of 1,000 cycles. This means that after 1,000 battery cycles, it will be considered “consumable” and will likely need to be replaced.

It’s important to note that this doesn’t mean the battery will stop charging immediately after reaching 1,000 cycles, but rather that its ability to hold a charge and conserve power will be significantly worse than before.

What does this mean in practical terms?

Of course, this will vary greatly depending on how you use your Mac. However, practically speaking, if you use one full battery cycle every day, it will take about 2.7 years to reach the 1,000-cycle mark.

For light use, around 0.3 cycles per day, that timeframe could extend to nearly nine years.

Finally, 1,000 cycles is the upper limit of what Apple currently offers, placing the MacBook Neo alongside most MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air models Apple has sold since 2009. Before that date, the battery cycle limit was between 300 and 500 cycles.

Where can I check my Mac’s battery cycle count?

Press and hold the Option key, click the Apple menu, and then select System Information.

Under the “Hardware” section of the System Information window, select “Power.” The current cycle count will be listed under the “Battery Information” section.
