Android 17 officially launches… AI automatically books appointments and fills out forms

Google has officially begun rolling out its new Android 17 operating system for Pixel devices, packed with the most advanced and efficient artificial intelligence yet, thanks to the integration of the Gemini Intelligence ecosystem.

While some advanced features and functionalities, such as the intelligent autofill seen at the developer conference last May, won’t be fully available until later this year, the current update includes many innovative features that Pixel users can experience immediately, paving the way for the update’s arrival on other supported devices later this year.

Google’s strategy for launching its bold operating systems has undergone a radical shift. This earlier release gives Google a significant competitive advantage over its traditional rival, Apple. While Google has already begun providing older Pixel phones with features announced barely a month ago, Apple users will have to wait until next fall to see any of the features Apple announced last week at its annual developer conference.

Turn any app into a “bubble” for super-multitasking
Google has redefined the concept of multitasking by expanding the “bubbles” feature. Previously limited to messaging apps, users can now turn any app on their phone into a floating bubble on the home screen by long-pressing it and selecting the bubble icon. Tapping the bubble opens the app in a small, independent window. On foldable phones, the bubbles will appear in a dedicated bar at the bottom of the screen, with the ability to freely resize them.

Enhanced Gaming Experience for Foldable Phones
Foldable phones, such as the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, have received a significant number of updates. The system offers an innovative 50/50 split-screen gaming experience: the top half displays the game, while the bottom half transforms into a virtual controller, eliminating the need for physical controllers. The system also supports a feature to remap control buttons for gamers and improves memory cleanup efficiency to prevent frame drops during demanding games.

A Revolution in Data Security and Privacy
Android 17 places a strong emphasis on security. Users can now grant apps temporary permission to access their precise location instead of permanent access, and they can restrict location sharing to specific contacts only. The “Find My Device” feature in Find Hub has also been enhanced to require biometric verification (fingerprint or facial recognition) to prevent a thief from unlocking the phone if they know the passcode. Additionally, there are improvements to real-time threat detection and a reduction in the number of incorrect passcode attempts, along with an increased waiting time between failed attempts.

Instagram Reaction Videos: Creating reaction videos is easier than ever. The system now allows simultaneous recording of the phone screen and front camera in a single step, eliminating the need to upload the video, record the reaction, and then merge them using editing software. This gives users something akin to a “virtual green screen” integrated into the selfie camera.

Features Coming Later This Year:

Google’s “Super-Intelligence System” Concept: Google is betting on transforming Android from a mere “operating system” into an “intelligence system” that learns and operates on behalf of the user. With its suite of AI proxy features, Gemini will be able to handle entire daily tasks, saving users time. For example, you could ask it to book an appointment with a highly rated dentist or retrieve your driver’s license information to automatically fill out official forms.

To add a touch of elegance, Google developed the Material Expressive interface, where AI operates in the background and only appears when needed, offering subtle visual cues that indicate it’s “thinking” or “listening” without being distracting.

Self-Automatic Browsing via Chrome
Coming in late June, this feature will allow users to entrust Gemini with complex browsing and search tasks, such as planning a party, booking appointments, or finding and alerting you to rare or out-of-stock items.

Smart Autofill
The traditional autofill feature will receive a significant boost in intelligence. With a single tap, Gemini will be able to securely read and fill in even the most complex and sensitive data, such as passport numbers or license plate numbers, within apps and the Chrome browser.

Custom Widget Creation
Users will be able to request the creation of a custom widget for their home screen via a simple text command to Gemini, without being tied to any specific app. For example, you can ask it to “create a widget that shows me three healthy, protein-rich recipes each week,” and the AI will automatically update the data directly on your screen.

Redesigned 4,000 Emojis
Google has redesigned its entire emoji library to be more realistic and high-resolution, with finer visual details. These new emojis will soon be available in Gboard, YouTube, and Gmail.

Easier Switching from iOS to Android
Google has addressed previous issues with data transfers from iPhones. The new transfer process will create the same home screen shortcuts you had on your iPhone, making it feel right at home. It will also automatically transfer all saved passwords, saving you time and effort.

Professional Instagram Integration
Through a strategic partnership with Meta, the Instagram camera on Android will support true Ultra HDR video and photo shooting, with native AI optical image stabilization and Night Mode enabled directly within the app. The system will also receive exclusive editing features such as Smart Enhance to fix blurry photos and videos, and a feature to separate individual audio tracks to enhance certain audio elements or eliminate them entirely.
