Apple Maps is preparing to welcome ads: a new step to boost revenue

A new report from Bloomberg, citing renowned analyst Mark Gurman, reveals that Apple plans to integrate ads into its Maps app. The official announcement is expected this month, with ads potentially starting to appear for iPhone users by the summer of 2026.

How will the ads appear?

Apple will likely follow a model similar to Google Maps and Yelp, where brands and businesses can bid to appear at the top of search results when users search for specific keywords.

While the inclusion of ads might concern some users, past experiences with competing apps haven’t been overly disruptive, a pattern Apple users hope to replicate in their version.

Economic Motives: Supporting the Services Sector
This move aims to bolster Apple’s services sector, which currently generates a staggering $100 billion in annual revenue. This segment alone accounts for approximately 25% of the company’s total annual revenue, but it faces increasing challenges:

In the short and long term: Regulators around the world are pushing for changes to App Store policies.

Seeking alternatives: Apple is looking to open new advertising channels to offset any potential decline in App Store revenue.

A natural evolution or a surprise?

Apple has not yet officially commented on these reports, but the idea isn’t new; rumors about this move began circulating as early as 2022. Since Apple already displays ads in the App Store and Apple News, its move to Maps seems like a logical step and a natural evolution of its advertising strategy.
