PlayStation Leader Addresses Bluepoint Closure in Leaked Memo

PlayStation Announces Closure of Bluepoint Games Amid Industry Challenges

The news of Bluepoint Games’ closure has surfaced as a significant talking point in the gaming community following an internal message from PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst. Reportedly, the studio’s shutdown is attributed to a “challenging industry environment,” which seems contradictory when paired with the recent success of PlayStation titles. The leaked memo hints at the sustainability issues affecting the company’s current operations, raising eyebrows among fans and industry analysts alike.

Details Behind the Decision to Shut Down Bluepoint Games

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier reported on February 19 that Sony Interactive Entertainment is shutting down Bluepoint Games. While an official announcement from Sony is still pending, many Bluepoint employees have taken to LinkedIn to confirm their impending layoffs.

In an email sent company-wide, Hulst acknowledged the closure while commending the studio’s contributions to PlayStation. He mentioned the successful launches of titles such as Ghost of Yotei, MLB The Show, and Helldivers 2. Despite these successes, he expressed concerns about rising development costs and changing player behaviors, indicating that these factors have made it increasingly difficult to operate sustainably within the current landscape.

“These pressures are making it harder to build games sustainably.” – Hermen Hulst

The Impact of Industry Pressures on Development Costs

Hulst’s internal message highlighted key challenges such as slowed industry growth and broader economic troubles, which are affecting game development profitability. According to sources, Bluepoint had been exploring potential projects for over a year after a live service game was canceled in January 2025. Unfortunately, this led to the studio’s eventual shutdown without the release of new content as an official subsidiary of Sony.

Social media reactions have generally condemned the decision, with critical comments calling it a “waste of a talented studio,” citing it as a consequence of Sony’s shift toward a more aggressive live service approach.

Employment Outlook for Bluepoint Games Staff

As of late 2025, Bluepoint Games employed over 70 people. It remains uncertain how many of those employees will find new roles within Sony’s other gaming studios. Hulst mentioned in his memo that plans are in place to try and relocate impacted employees, although the exact number of salvaged positions remains unclear. Many Bluepoint staffers, however, have begun searching for new job opportunities on LinkedIn since the announcement.

Some of the notable names seeking new roles include art directors and environment artists, comprising over 20% of the studio’s workforce.

Industry Volatility and Recent Layoffs

The closure of Bluepoint Games is yet another sign of volatility within the gaming industry. Sony has previously shut down several other studios, including the mobile-focused Neon Koi and Firewalk, signaling broader shifts within its gaming divisions. Notably, the formal closure of Bluepoint is set for March 2026.

Conclusion: What Lies Ahead for PlayStation Studios

As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, the closure of Bluepoint Games reminds industry stakeholders of the challenges that face even the most well-regarded studios. With the announcement of many layoffs and studio closures, it’s evident that Sony is re-evaluating its strategies in a bid to maintain robust operations amidst rising pressures.
