Rebel Wolves has excited RPG fans by revealing exciting details about their upcoming game, “The Blood of Dawnwalker,” clarifying the mystery surrounding its most controversial feature: the “time” mechanic.
In this context, the project’s creative director, Mateusz Thomas-Kiewicz, emphasized that the game doesn’t end when time runs out. He explained that the “30-day, 1-night deadline to rescue your family” isn’t a traditional timer that puts pressure on the player, but rather a tool to alter the narrative. If you don’t reach your family within the allotted time, the game won’t end; instead, life continues, and the story takes a completely different turn, unlocking exclusive content you wouldn’t have seen if you followed the conventional path.
To allay any concerns, the developers revealed that the game’s time system functions as a “currency” used to unlock quests, not as a relentless hourglass. Each of the 30 days is divided into eight segments, and only a portion is consumed by completing specific main quests marked with an hourglass symbol.
This design gives the player complete freedom to roam and explore every corner of the world without a single second of virtual time passing, allowing them to balance rushing to save their family in an extremely difficult situation, or spending time dismantling the influence of the evil vampire “Princess” and gathering allies to ensure victory.
The time system is coupled with what the studio calls a “narrative sandbox,” a structure inspired by classics from the Golden Age like “Fallout 1” and “Fallout 2.” Instead of adhering to a linear, interconnected main quest sequence that could be disrupted if a character dies, Dawnwalker’s missions revolve around the central objective as independent “satellites.” This allows players to make bold decisions and eliminate key characters without fear of spoiling the game. The system simply closes story arcs and opens new ones that perfectly align with the player’s choices, much like the freedom offered in traditional pen-and-paper campaigns.
This endless variety of choices presented the design team with complex logistical challenges in crafting the final chapter at Princess Castle, where the scenario for the final assault changes entirely depending on the allies recruited or the vampire leaders eliminated or negotiated with.
The studio’s ambitions don’t stop there. They plan to make this game the beginning of an extended saga called “The Dawnwalker Saga,” in which player choices will unfold across Multiple parts spanning different time periods up to the 21st century, similar to the “Mass Effect” series, making each experience unique and entirely crafted by its creator at a perfect time when deep role-playing games are gaining popularity worldwide.
