Goodbye to discs… Sony settles the future of PlayStation games with a historic decision

Sony has officially announced the complete transition of its PlayStation gaming division to a fully digital platform, permanently discontinuing the production of physical game discs starting in January 2028. Following this decision, players will only be able to purchase new games through digital downloads from the official PlayStation Store or via digital vouchers from physical retailers.

Sony explained that this strategic decision comes in response to “rapidly shifting consumer preferences,” with digital sales now overwhelmingly surpassing physical sales. Physical disc sales accounted for only 3% of PlayStation’s total revenue last year. The launch of the PS5 Pro in 2024 without a disc drive was a clear indication of the Japanese company’s future direction.

The company confirmed that this transition will not affect physical discs already on the market or those scheduled for release before the January 2028 deadline. However, the implications of this announcement appear to be significant. The used video game market will take a major hit as players are unable to trade in or sell their old games, and traditional retailers will also be significantly impacted.

The first signs of this new era were already visible when Rockstar announced it would be abandoning physical discs for its highly anticipated next-generation title, GTA 6. While physical discs are an ideal option for consumers and those interested in preserving their gaming history, the economic viability and cost-cutting factors are tipping the scales in favor of the digital model for major companies. Xbox has been moving in this direction for some time, while Nintendo, the dominant player in disc sales, has begun attracting its customers to digital by offering lower prices and introducing game cards with limited content that require additional downloads.

The farewell to discs wasn’t the only shocking news for PlayStation fans; Sony simultaneously announced the official closure of the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita consoles. Once closed, users will no longer be able to purchase new games or content for these platforms, while Sony will allow the reloading of previously purchased games “in the foreseeable future.”

The closure of the older stores is scheduled to take effect in some global markets starting this August, while the company will give its users in the United States until next summer (July 2027) to purchase and add to their libraries. Sony concluded its statement by saying, “We know this news may be disappointing for PS3 and PS Vita players who hold this generation in high regard. Both consoles represent an important era in our history, and this decision was by no means easy.”
