It seems that video game enthusiasts are in for a long test of patience. Since the moment the new Steam Controller was released, it has sold out completely, with no sign of a resolution to the current supply shortage. In an unwelcome surprise, Valve has officially announced that new shipments and pre-orders may not reach their owners until 2027.
The company has allowed users who have already reserved their devices to check their expected delivery dates on the dedicated Steam page. Current available dates are September and December of this year, 2026, while additional orders have been directly rolled over to 2027.
The Steam Controller is Valve’s latest breakthrough in the world of gaming peripherals, designed to work exclusively with the Steam platform. According to expert reviews, the device boasts exceptional durability and a sleek, streamlined design, along with an advanced joystick that utilizes high-precision TMR magnetic technology.
However, Engadget’s technical report indicated that the device’s only significant drawback lies in its exclusivity; it doesn’t function as a general-purpose controller for PCs, but is limited to the Steam environment. This reflects Valve’s desire to maintain its grip and exert absolute dominance over the digital gaming market.
In a diplomatic comment reflecting the scale of the crisis, a company spokesperson stated: “Initial demand has exceeded all our expectations. When we compare this overwhelming demand with the production capacity we can achieve before the end of the year, we find it necessary to moderate public expectations.”
Despite the statement’s assurances that the company is doing everything possible to accelerate production and ship as many devices as possible, these complications put Valve’s other commitments at risk. These delays coincide with previous promises to release the Steam Machine console and Steam Frame virtual reality headset into users’ homes this summer, presenting the brand with a real challenge to prove its ability to deliver on its promises.
